Dental implants
Implants are a way of replacing missing teeth, from a single tooth to a full arch of teeth. Simply explained an implant is a titanium ‘screw’ which is inserted into the jaw bone during the surgery procedure. A post is mounted onto the implant, a crown or other type of restoration is then placed on the post.
There are a number of benefits in having implants:
- If only one tooth is missing there is no need to prepare teeth adjacent to the gap in order to place a bridge,
- If more than one tooth is missing you might be a candidate for a bridge supported on implants instead of having a removable denture,
- If all teeth are missing implants might be your last chance for eating and speaking properly and for improving your appearance – implants can keep a denture very stable or if higher number of implants can be placed there is a chance you may be able to have a non-removable bridge made.
You should discuss with your dentist whether implants would be the right option for you.
Ideally patients should:
- Have healthy gums,
- Have enough jawbone for implant placement and support,
- Be prepared to maintain good mouth hygiene and visit the dentist regularly,
- Be in good general health, because of the surgery needed; some chronic disease, such as diabetes, osteoporosis or chronic sinus problem, could interfere with healing and make implants more likely to fail,
- Tell the dentist about any medications that you take regularly,
- Tell your dentist about your smoking habits.
